Edward C. Outlaw

Edward Cobb Outlaw served as the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11) from September 10, 1959 to September 8, 1960.

Outlaw entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1931 and graduated as an ensign in 1935. He was designated a naval aviator in 1938. During World War II, he was assigned to a number of squadrons and became the commanding officer of fighting squadron VF-32. Outlaw became an ace in a day on April 29, 1944, shooting down five Japanese aircraft in a combat mission over Truk Atoll.

After the war, he held a number of commands. He commanded Air Group 6 in 1947. In June 1958, he assumed command of the seaplane tender USS Duxbury Bay (AVP-38). The following year, he was transferred to command of Intrepid.

Outlaw retired from the Navy as a rear admiral in 1969. He died on March 5, 1996.
