Edward M. Bell

Edward M. Bell, from East Chicago, Indiana, served aboard the submarine USS Growler (SSG-577) from 1962 to 1964, as an electrician’s mate second class (EM2). Bell joined the Navy in December 1957 and separated from the Navy in August 1984, leaving with the rating of electrician’s mate master chief petty officer (EMCM). After serving in the Navy, Bell worked for the Department of the Navy as a ship surveyor.

The Museum interviewed Bell for the oral history collection (OHP.063). In the interview, he described the submarine's mission, life on board, and his responsibilities as an electrician's mate. Bell, who is Black, also described experiences related to race in the Navy.
