Robert Russ

Robert Russ, from central Wisconsin, served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVS-11) as a hospital corpsman second class (HM2) from 1970 to 1971. Prior to his time aboard Intrepid, Russ was stationed at naval hospitals in Newport, Rhode Island, and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. After leaving Intrepid, Russ received orders to the ROTC unit at the University of Wisconsin and attended school for four years (in a Navy program) so he could receive his nursing degree. He then spent eleven years as a nurse in the Navy, mainly working in ICUs, and serving in a middle management role at his last duty station.

After retiring from the Navy, Russ continued to work in the medical field as an ICU nurse, a clinical instructor in nursing, various other nursing positions, and a risk manager for a hospital. Russ then changed careers to become a golf pro. The Museum recorded his oral history interview on October 19, 2021.
