Richard H. Truly

Richard H. Truly was designated a naval aviator in 1960. He flew F-8 Crusaders with Fighter Squadron 33 (VF-33) from USS Intrepid during the 1961–1962 Mediterranean cruise. From 1963 to 1965, he was a student and then instructor at the U.S. Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School, Edwards Air Force Base, California.

In 1965, Truly became one of the first astronauts selected to the Air Force's Manned Orbiting Laboratory program. He transferred to NASA as an astronaut in August 1969. He was pilot for one of the two-astronaut crews that flew the Approach and Landing Tests of the space shuttle Enterprise in 1977. Truly's first space flight was on November 12–14, 1981 on STS-2, the second orbital flight of the Space Shuttle Program. He served as commander of STS-8 in 1983. Truly served as the Administrator of NASA from 1989 to 1992.
