Samuel Taylor, from Atlantic, North Carolina, served on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVS-11) from October 1965 through September 1967. He was an aviation machinist's mate jet engine mechanic third class (ADJ3). Taylor was part of the crew during the ship's first two deployments to the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. He worked in the Air Department. In 1966, he served on the flight deck as a plane handler as part of the V-1 division. For the 1967 deployment, he was reassigned to the V-6 division and worked in the engine shop as a jet engine mechanic.
