DescriptionExtent: 3 folders, 2 oversize maps (flat files)The Jon Matthews Papers include correspondence, ship printed materials and ephemera from Matthews' time aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid as a photographer's mate third class (PH3). Ship printed materials in the collection include a USS Intrepid calendar, Familygrams, grocery bill, ship newspapers, and port of call booklets. Much of the collection is ephemera that Matthews collected in the various ports of call, such as tourist pamphlets and maps, translation guides, postcards, business cards, and programs.
Calendar; USS Intrepid calendar, 1958
Bill; Grocery Bill, no date. From the Commissary Division. Lists the total amount of food consumed by the crew during the deployment, as well as the costs to feed the crew.
Pamphlet; Aircraft Taxi Signals in Use by U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps
Correspondence; Familygram to Mrs. Matthews from Paul Masterson, Commanding Officer (2 pages), no date. This familygram was sent before the 1959 Mediterranean Cruise to Mrs. Matthews (Matthews's mother) and talks about the reason for the cruise, where they will be going, and what families can do to help their loved ones through the deployment. It mentions an enclosed booklet that details their cruise, which may be the Mediterranean Cruise 1959 ports of call booklet found later in this collection.
Newspaper; partially cut Ketcher, August 28, 1959. The top of the front page is cut out, as well as a couple of letters in the headlines.
