USS Intrepid (CV/CVA/CVS-11)

BiographyThe U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Intrepid was commissioned on August 16, 1943. It was decommissioned for the final time on March 15, 1974. During its time in commission, Intrepid served in World War II, the Cold War, the space race and the Vietnam War. Intrepid went on to become the centerpiece of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, which opened to the public on August 3, 1982.

Intrepid was commissioned as CV-11. The ship was recommissioned as an attack aircraft carrier, CVA-11, in 1954. It was reclassified as an anti-submarine warfare support carrier, CVS-11, in 1962.
