DescriptionRaymond T. Stone served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) as a radarman second class during World War II, from 1943 to 1945. The Museum recorded his oral history interview on June 14, 2013.See transcript for complete interview. Below is a summary:
Stone began his interview by recalling the moment he learned of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He then discussed his decision to join the Navy, basic training, how he became a radarman, and his first time seeing Intrepid.
As the interview continued, Stone described his work in Intrepid’s combat information center (CIC). He covered topics such as the layout of CIC, how information was communicated throughout CIC, and the daily tasks and importance of CIC. Stone also discussed specific examples of how enemy aircraft were tracked and intercepted. Between his accounts of CIC and aircraft interceptions, Stone also recalled memories that provided insights into life aboard ship and liberty.
Stone then discussed the kamikaze attack that occurred on November 25, 1944. He recounted his experience during this attack, noting that he was stationed in CIC when the attack began. Stone also explained how he and other crew members found their way to the flight deck, before describing the activity on the flight deck and the aftermath of the attack.
The interview then focused on Stone’s service after his time aboard Intrepid, and he discussed his transfer from Intrepid and his later assignments, before recounting the celebration that he experienced in Boston when the war ended.
Stone concluded his interview by providing a brief description of his post-Navy career as an art director and creative director, eventually running his own small advertising agency with a few partners.
