DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Vertical image of crew members of the submarine USS Growler hanging out on a pier at the Naval Facility in Adak, Alaska. A man in dungarees and a deck jacket is sitting on an upside down pot on the right. Duane Heatwole, who served as a cook on board Growler, is wearing in a white undershirt and “Dixie cup” hat. He is sitting on the other half of the pot. He has his arm around a man squatting on the ground. The man squatting is wearing a jacket with a Growler patch on it; he has a cigarette in his hand. There are other men in jackets in the background. One on the right is smoking a cigarette. The men have light skin. The photograph has been cut and only the right half is provided. There is a white scalloped border on the top, bottom and right side of the image. The back has “Adak // probably 1961 // Sailor smoking cig // is Jim Hefferman” written in black ink.On View
