DescriptionExtent: 4 folders, 1 oversize folderShaun O’Shaughnessy served on board the submarine USS Growler (SSG-577) from 1962–1963. He was a missile technician third class (MT3). His papers include correspondence and certificates from his Naval and submarine training, a letter to his parents, his discharge papers, and other ephemera from his submarine training and service. Included in the papers are two sets of qualification drawings, which were required before O'Shaughnessy could qualify on Growler and earn his dolphins.
Correspondence; letter to Mr. & Mrs. George M. O’Shaughnessy, November 3, 1962. The letter describes O’Shaughnessy’s journey back to Hawaii after spending some time with his family. He discusses the effect of the Cuban Missile Crisis on Growler’s patrol and how it affected his travels back to Growler. He finishes the letter by telling his parents how nice it was to spend time with them and see other family members.

Correspondence (from dissembled training scrapbook)
- September 14, 1960. Letter to Mr. George Michael O’Shaughnessy from Captain V.J. Soballe, the Commanding Officer of the Recruit Training Command U.S. Naval Training Center. The letter explains that Mr. O’Shaughnessy’s son, George L. O’Shaughnessy, has been selected as Honor Man of his Company, and that he will be presented with a Certificate of Honor on September 24, 1960.
