The Harold C. Small Papers contains items from his time in the U.S. Navy, including his time aboard USS Intrepid from 1943–1945 as an officer in the Gunnery Department. The papers document shipboard activity such as a memorandum about the status of the ship’s gun mounts and fire control systems at the time of commissioning, roster of officers from February 1944, newspaper clippings and a handwritten note on Intrepid stationery that appears to list last names and ratings of a few sailors. General items include a provisions list with prices, blank forms (related to charts, currents, ports, aircraft facilities) and two different editions of Fables for Flyers, cartoon cautionary tales for pilots.
