DescriptionPhotograph, black and white; Official horizontal image of a Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat on Intrepid's flight deck getting ready for take-off. The canopy is open and the pilot can be seen with a helmet on. "39" is visible on the aircraft's nose. Other crewmembers can be seen just off the flight deck. The sea beyond the ship is calm and the sky is clear. There is a white border around the image. The squadron identification on the back side erroneously identifies the squadron at VT-18 instead of VF-18. Back reads "Intrepid // VT 18 // W.C. Bates" handwritten in black ink.
