DescriptionExtent: 8 foldersThe Jackie Augustin Correspondence contains a series of letters sent from Jackie Augustin to her husband, William Eugene Augustin, while he was on board USS Intrepid from May 17, 1957 to March 26, 1958. The letters discuss Jackie and their son Billy's everyday life, struggles, health issues and goings on in the apartment building they own, where they also live. Many of the envelopes have "Answered" handwritten on them, presumably by William E. Augustin. There is also test from a correspondence course that William E. Augustin was taking.
The letters begin after William, whom she refers to as Gene, has left for his deployment. Jackie expresses how much she misses him and keeps him up to date on what’s going on at home, while remarking on things he discusses in his letters to her. She is hoping for him to get a transfer to somewhere that would bring him closer to their home in Chicago. She often tries to arrange to visit him when he is in Virginia and cannot return home. She expresses her frustration with Gene being away for so long after he had told her it would not be as long as it was for his previous deployment. Jackie gives updates on their son, Billy, and discusses the hardships of being a single parent while her husband is away. She talks about what their tenants are doing and what they are asking her to do to their apartments. Jackie gives Gene updates on various family members and friends throughout the correspondence.
Throughout the course of the letters, Jackie has to have all of her teeth pulled due to an infection in her gums. She becomes depressed and expresses to Gene that she hopes he’ll still love her as the teeth removal has changed the shape of her face. She has to wait two months before the dentist can create a mold of her mouth for a set of ceramic teeth. Gene also seems to have some dental troubles, as Jackie asks him about visiting the dentist on Intrepid while he is at sea.
There are two items in the collections for William E. Augustin. Those are both relating to a real estate correspondence course he was taking from 1956–1957.
