The papers in this collection cover his career in the U.S. Navy and include some personal correspondence both to Zieg and to his family members after he was killed.

Card, Identification; United States Navy Identification Card for Harold Lawrence Zieg.

Correspondence;
- November 2, 1944 (envelope and two-page letter); Letter from Harold Zieg to Grant Parr, a war correspondent in Nebraska, where Zieg was from. Zieg congratulates Parr on getting married and relays information to Parr about Zieg's family back home.

- November 21, 1944 (envelope and one-page letter); Letter to Zieg from E. H. Long, Zieg's father-in-law. The front of the envelope is stamped "Returned to Sender // Unclaimed // By F.P.O. Directory // Service, Wash., D.C." The back stamp reads "Directory Service // Wash., D.C. // Jan 4 1945." The letter could not be delivered because it arrived after Zieg was killed in the November 25, 1944 kamikaze attack. In the letter, Long tells Zieg he bought the flowers and candy for Zieg's wife Betty for her birthday that Zieg asked him to purchase. Long tells Zieg of the birthday celebrations and other day-to-day life updates.

- December 13, 1944 (envelope, one page letter, and newspaper clipping); Letter from J.C. Penney Company's Personnel Director to Mrs. H. L. Zieg. The letter states that they were just informed of Zieg being "missing in action" and offers their hope and sympathy to Mrs. H. L. Zieg. Clipping found in envelope reads "Intrepid Back // In Fight After // Five Attacks."

- May 31, 1945 (envelope, one-page letter); Letter from University of Nebraska Dean T. J. Thompson to Mrs. Harold L. Zieg. The letter expresses Thompson's sympathy after finding out that Harold Zieg was killed in action.

- July 5, 1948 (one-page letter); Letter from the Navy Department Bureau of Naval Personnel to Mrs. Harold L. Zieg. The letter informs Mrs. Zieg that Harold L. Zieg has been posthumously awarded the American Campaign Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.

Telegram; June 26, 1944. From Betty to Harold, reads "All my loving darling I've liked being married to you // Betty."

Clipping, newspaper; "Intrepid Gets Beating // but Stings 300 Ships" and includes two black and white photographs of Intrepid after the kamikaze attacks on both March 19, 1945 and November 25, 1944.
