DescriptionBag, Duffel; U.S. Navy olive drab canvas seabag or duffel bag with side canvas handle and strap. One end of the strap is attached to the bag and the other end has a black metal snap hook closure. There are four black metal grommets around the top opening edge of the bag. Next to the canvas handle is a vertical rectangular pocket with flap closure and metal snap in the center. On the interior of the bag on the side with the handle, there is a flap of fabric that appears to be a pocket but no opening is visible. There is a black stamp below the pocket that reads “US”.
There is handwriting in black marker to the top left of the pocket that reads “USS Hank // DD-702 // USS Intrepid // CVS-11”. There is a black stamp in the center of one side that reads “Miller R E // 794 08 37”. There is handwriting in black marker all the way down one side of the bag with a diagram on the proper left side of the list. The diagram shows the longitude at which the ship crossed the Equator. The diagram has an “E” with a circle and a line extending horizontally. The line has the handwritten words “crossed // the // line” in the center and hash marks on either side. Below is written “*66 // 67 // 68” on the left and “108° E // 108° 10 (?) // E // 76° 16 (?)” The star next to “66” refers to text below the diagram that reads “* shellback”.
The list includes ports of call visited during the years that Miller was on board. It reads: ““65” Great Lakes // “65” Montreal, Quebec // “66” Philadelphia PA // “66” San Francisco // “66” “67” Subic Bay // “66” Manila > Philippines // “66” “67” Cubi Point // “66” “67” Suez Canal // “66” “67” Mayport Fla // “66” “67” “68” Norfolk VA // “67” Yokosuka, Japan // “67” Hakone Japan // “67” Hong Kong // “67” Tokyo Japan // Tonkin Gulf // “66” “67” Vietnam // “68” Guantanamo Bay Cuba // “Going // Home” // May 31, 1968”.
