DescriptionLighter; USS Intrepid lighter (a) in original box in two parts, box lid (b) and base (c), and pamphlet (d).a) Lighter; Silver lighter with flip lid and an engraving depicting Intrepid’s port side while at sea with "U.S.S. Intrepid // CVA-11" engraved in red enamel underneath. The image of the ship and water is colored in with black, blue and white enamel. Engraved at the top left is a Battle Efficiency “E” and two hash marks in white enamel.
On the reverse side of the lighter, the unofficial Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club insignia is engraved. It consists of a yellow-orange circle with a black border and three red stripes running through the center, referencing the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) flag. There is a silhouette of a black junk ship in the center with "Tonkin Gulf // Yacht Club" surrounding it. The image is colored with enamel.
On the bottom of the lighter "Bradford, PA. // Zippo ®" is engraved. The three vertical lines on either side of the engraving date the lighter to 1968.
b) Box lid: Lid has “Zippo® // Lighter” printed within a large red and brown flame. "Zippo" is printed in black and "Lighter" is printed in red. Printed on the lower right is an image of an open lighter with the flame ignited. There is a black stripe that runs the length of the lid on the right. There is a brown stripe that runs for half of the width of the lid on the right.
c) Box base; Base has a gold exterior and black and white interior with “Zippo®" printed in gray ink at top. There is an inset space where the lighter rests that is white with “For Best Results // Use // Zippo® // Flints And // Zippo Fluid // * // Place Spare Flints Under Felt In End” printed in black ink. At bottom there is a diagram of a lighter printed in black ink with a star to denote where to place spare flints and felt.
d) Pamphlet; Fold-out, double-sided pamphlet with diagrams and instructions printed in red, black, and white ink. The front side instructs how to repair, re-fuel, and re-flint a Zippo lighter. The reverse side details how to personalize a Zippo lighter with a monogram or embossed military insignia and includes a form for ordering.
