DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Official horizontal image of a sailor standing in USS Intrepid’s fo’c’sle, or anchor chain room, as water rushes in during a storm. The sailor is wearing a U.S. Navy dungaree working uniform, and he has light skin and dark hair. The opening for one of the ship’s anchor chains is at the center of the image, and the chain itself extends toward the foreground left, where one of its attachment points inside the ship is visible. The sailor is holding a bucket in each hand, and looking toward the anchor chain opening, where a rush of water is spraying into the ship. There is a piece of cloth on the wall in the background embroidered with an artistic design of stylized chains, some broken, arranged in a triangular shape. There is a white border around the image.A horizontal strip of paper is taped to the bottom part of the image with the caption “Foc’sle takes a beating through the bullnose, 40’ high above the water line, by “mistral” 4-5 Nov 61” printed in black ink.
