Certificate awarded to LTJG Phillip Mall on June 1, 1967. Pictures include landmarks along the Suez Canal including pyramids, the Great Sphinx, camels, statue of de Lesseps and map of the canal. The certificate is bordered with hieroglyphics. The bottom right corner reads “© 1958 Marine Pub. Co. // Box 6162 San Diego, Cal.”
Full text reads "To all Marines wherever ye may be: // and to all camel herders, sun worshippers, sheiks, sultans, caliphs, snake // charmers, thieves and beggars and other dwellers of the desert Greetings: // Know ye that on this 1st day of June, 1967, // The USS Intrepid (CVS-11) // crossed the Isthmus of Suez by transiting // the Suez Canal // be it remembered that // LTJG Phillip J. Mall, USN // has entered the land of temples, pyramids and sphinx and survived the // peril of "Khamsin" wind of fifty days. He is therefore found // worthy to be numbered as an honorable crew member who has been // duly initiated as a sun-parched creature. So by protection of the // Royal Pallette he may be regarded as in good standing of the // Grand Order of the Ancient Mariners of the Desert // Pharoah [sic] Seti I // Prince of the Faithful // Ruler of the First Canal // John W. Fair // commanding".
