Vincent F. Kelley

BiographyCaptain Vincent F. Kelley served as commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVS-11) during the ship's third deployment to the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. He held this command from June 22, 1968 until November 22, 1968, and then again from December 18, 1968 to August 4, 1969. Kelley briefly turned over command of the ship to Capt. Whitney Wright when he left the ship to have a medical procedure.

Kelley was born in Iowa. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program at Pensacola. He was commissioned an ensign and received his wings in 1942. Kelley served in a number of squadrons on board different aircraft carriers. In 1950, he served on board USS Leyte (CV-32) off Korea and flew against MiGs in aerial combat.

Before assuming command of Intrepid, Kelley served as the commanding officer of a number of squadrons. He served as the operations officer and then the executive officer of the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41). He subsequently became the commanding officer of the dock landing ship USS Monticello (LSD-35).

Kelley died in 1999.
