Joseph F. Bolger

BiographyJoseph F. Bolger served as the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) from May 30, 1944 until February 15, 1945, during World War II. During his time in command of Intrepid, the ship participated in the Formosa Air Battle and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The ship also sustained damage from three kamikaze attacks. In September 1945, Bolger became the first commanding officer of the new aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41), which also survives as a museum ship. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1953 with the rank of vice admiral.
