Norwald R. Quiel

BiographyNorwald R. Quiel served on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) as a F4U Corsair fighter pilot with Fighting Squadron 10 (VF-10) in March and April of 1945. He was on board when Intrepid was hit by a kamikaze on April 16, 1945. In action that day, he shot down four enemy aircraft. He later earned the Silver Star for his efforts. Quiel was an ace with six confirmed kills including those of April 16.

Quiel served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1966. He was an ensign while serving on Intrepid. Quiel retired as a commander.
