The John Bardo Gattey Papers contain materials from Gattey's service aboard USS Intrepid in 1944. He was killed in action during the kamikaze attacks on November 25, 1944. It includes a diary from his time aboard Intrepid, as well as his marriage certificate, his Purple Heart certificate, and a memorial certificate signed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt after his death.

Diary; 1944. Front of diary says "Whiter-Steele Company // Manufacturers of // Hardwood, Pine, and Hemlock Lumber // Prop Timber and Ties // Northumberland, PA." Diary is a calendar style with sparse entries. The first entry is January 3, 1944 and the last entry is "July 25, 1944: "Received orders at USS Intrepid // Reported aboard. Assigned to V-6 Div of // Air Dept. Lt. Christen [sp?]". There was a white ribbon marking the date of this entry which has been removed and stored separately.

Certificate, marriage; March 6, 1944. For John Bardo Gattey and Dorothy Helen Lakatos. Box certificate was in was photographed and disposed of.

Certificate, commemorative; November 25, 1944. Memorial certificate from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Certificate came in cardboard tube with metal end caps original to the certificate and is addressed to "Mrs. Dorothy L. Gattey // 64 W. Main St. // Bogota, N.J." Back of the certificate has the numbers "287630" on the bottom left corner.
