DescriptionMarie Campoli was named Miss Intrepid in 1972. The Intrepid Museum recorded her oral history interview on August 16, 2018.See transcript for complete interview. Below is a summary:
Marie Campoli began her interview by discussing her family and her upbringing in West Warwick, Rhode Island, near the U.S. Navy base at Quonset Point. She explained her early connection to USS Intrepid through an old boyfriend and how that connection led many crew members to visit her family for dinners and other gatherings. She speculated that one of those sailors must have submitted her picture to the Miss Intrepid contest.
The interview continued with a description of the Miss Intrepid role. Campoli discussed her visit to the ship for the Dependent’s Day Cruise and riding in the Bristol Fourth of July Parade. Next, Campoli reflected on what the Miss Intrepid contest meant to the crew and how her family opened their home to young sailors away from their families for the first time. She described what her mother would cook and how she and her siblings formed deep connections with the sailors, including a few marriages.
