DescriptionGold Star banner (a) and certificate (b) with postal tube (c).a) Flag, service; rectangular, cream-colored gold star window banner with patriotic crushed velvet design accents. There is text at the top and bottom center in red and blue crushed velvet that reads "Served // Our Country". There is a large gold star at center. Around the left, bottom and right edges of the banner there is an American flag motif. The design comprises a red crushed velvet inner border and a blue crushed velvet outer border. Above the borders there is a set of 13 white stars on a blue crushed velvet background at the top left and top right corners. The stars are arranged in alternating rows of three and two. Across the top of the banner there is a crushed blue velvet pole loop. Threaded through the loop is a wooden dowel with pointed end caps. The rod is suspended from a gold braided cord from which the banner hangs. The cord has gold tassels that hang down at either end.
b) Certificate, commemorative; rectangular white document with the obverse of The Great Seal of the United States at the top in color. The seal depicts a brown and white bald eagle with outstretched wings and a shield superimposed on its center. The shield has white and red stripes and the chief, or top band, is blue. The eagle holds a bundle of 13 white arrows in its left talon and a green olive branch in its right talon. In its beak, the eagle clutches a yellow scroll with the motto "E pluribus // Unum" printed on it in white. Over the eagle's head there appears a blue, yellow and white glory breaking through clouds with a cluster of 13 white stars. Below the seal, text printed in black ink reads "In Grateful Memory Of // Robert Lehr Schug // Who Died In The Service Of His Country At // Sea, Asiatic Area, attached U.S.S. Intrepid, 25 November 1944 // He Stands In The Unbroken Line Of Patriots Who Have Dared To Die // That Freedom Might Live And Grow, And Increase Its Blessing. // Freedom Lives, And Through It, He Lives— // In A Way That Humbles The Undertakings Of Most Men // Franklin D. Roosevelt // President Of The United States Of America". The back has text handwritten in pencil on the bottom left corner that reads "31298".
c) Tube, document; cylindrical cardboard container with a metal screw cap on either end. There is a white label adhered to the exterior of the tube with text printed on it in black ink. Text reads "Navy Department // Bureau Of Naval Personnel // Washington 25, D.C. // Official Business // Printed Matter // Penalty For Private Use // To Avoid Payment Of // Postage, $300 // (GPO) // Mrs. Bernice Schug // 235 South Frederick St. // Burbank, California // Navpers 804 // Pers 5323 // 31298".
