The shield has thirteen stars across the top and vertical stripes below. A gold fabric chin strap is attached to the hat band along the top edge of the visor with a small gold retaining button on either side. The buttons have a relief design featuring an eagle with outstretched wings grasping an anchor and stars around the outer edge. Officer insignia consisting of gold oak leaves are embroidered on the visor.
