DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Official horizontal image of a boarded up porthole in USS Intrepid’s secondary conning station, also called secondary conn. In the center of the image, there is a row of three portholes piercing a bulkhead. The central porthole has its interior glass cover raised, and boards have been placed over the inside and outside to seal it off during a storm, called a mistral by the crew. The board on the inside is secured to the surrounding bulkhead by a pair of vises. Electronic equipment is visible at the far left of the image. There is a white border around the image.A horizontal strip of paper is taped to the bottom part of the image with the caption “Shoring of porthole in Secondary Conn during storm of 4-5 November 61” printed in black ink.
