DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Personal horizontal image of a crew member adjusting a valve on a bilge pump on the lower level of a fire room (boiler room) on USS Intrepid. The sailor has dark hair and light skin, and he is wearing a U.S. Navy dungaree working uniform with the insignia of a first class petty officer. A notebook and pens are protruding from his shirt’s breast pocket, and a flashlight is hanging from the back of his belt. The man has a cigarette in his left hand and a metallic band around his left wrist. His right hand is extended to grasp a valve wheel attached to the top portion of an insulated pipe leading down into the bilge pump. Illegible operating instructions are posted on the bulkhead behind the upper part of the bilge pump. On the right side of the image, a table is visible with a vise attached to its front. There is a board attached to the bulkhead above the table, with two lines of illegible handwritten text above a piece of sailor art depicting a crossed hammer and wrench. There is a white border on the image with “Sep 67” printed in black ink. Back has “15” handwritten in blue ink and a repeating watermark which reads “A Kodak Paper.”
