DescriptionCartoon; Vertical black and white photograph of a cartoon or comic by Edward Ritter, titled "Oh Well – We All Make Mistakes!" The cartoon depicts an airplane resembling an F6F Hellcat being shot down by an American aircraft carrier. The pilot is Snipo, a character who appears throughout Ritter's work. He sits with one leg outside the cockpit and is waving an American flag. He is wearing a flight helmet and goggles and has light skin. Two large bullets or anti-aircraft shells can be seen piercing each wing of the airplane. There are two dark, round puffs of smoke in the air behind the plane. The airplane is anthropomorphic and has a sad face that appears to be crying. The airplane is flying over the ocean, and an aircraft carrier and smaller naval vessel can be seen below. Handwritten inscriptions at the bottom of the artwork read “Oh well – we all make mistakes! // Ritter // Oct 1944”.On View
