June Hays

BiographyJune Hays, from Santa Anna, Texas, was married to Wesley Hays, who served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11) as an aviator with bomber fighter squadron VBF-10 during World War II.

June and Wesley married in 1943, shortly after Wesley received his naval aviator wings. June experienced life on the home front while Wesley served aboard Intrepid in 1945. She also saw Intrepid while the ship was in Alameda, and even spent a brief moment on board Intrepid when she was allowed to help Wesley unpack in his room. June then returned to Texas where she raised their son, wrote to Wesley, and witnessed life on the home front. After the war had ended and Wesley returned home, the couple resumed their lives together and had three more children.

The Intrepid Museum interviewed June for the oral history collection in 2016 (OHP.096). The Museum also interviewed Wesley (OHP.095). June died just a few months after her oral history interview.
