Wilson Denver Key

BiographyWilson Denver Key served in the U.S. Navy from June 5, 1963 until June 30, 1993. He served on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVS-11) with attack squadron 34, VA-34, in 1967. At the time, Intrepid was deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. On November 17, 1967, Key was shot down while flying an A-4 Skyhawk over North Vietnam. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war in and around Hanoi for the next 5 1/2 years. Key was a lieutenant at the time he was shot down; his rank was advanced to captain while he was in captivity. Key was released as part of Operation Homecoming in 1973.

After retiring from the Navy, Key went on to become a teacher. He has participated in our oral history project (OHP 070).
