The photograph was taken during a change of command ceremony when Captain Henry G. Sanchez was relieved of duty by Commander A.A. Geisser.

The back of the photograph has a handwritten caption in black handwritten script, “Nov 4 1946 Capt Sanchez relieved of command of USS Intrepid by Commander Geizer”.
