DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal image of a change of command ceremony. Captain Edward C. Outlaw is standing at a lectern on a stage in the hangar deck. Another man, Capt. Paul Masterson, is seated to the right of the image. Both men are wearing officer dress white uniforms, complete with ceremonial swords. There are flags behind the seated man. A third man is standing on the left of the stage. There are men and women seated in front of the stage. All of the people in the image have light skin. There is a white border around the image.The back of the image has a stamped and handwritten captioned, “NO CVA-11: L2768 Date 9/10/59” A caption taped to the back reads, “Captain Edward C. Outlaw, U.S.N. reads his orders directing him to take command of the USS Intrepid (CVA-11) during brief ceremonies held aboard the USS Intrepid at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia on September 10th. Captain Outlaw relieved Captain Paul Masterson (seated) who will become Chief of Staff and Aide to Commander Second Fleet and Nato’s Striking Force Atlantic."
