DescriptionDiary; Ensign Mervin Beil served with Intrepid with bomber fighting squadron 10, VBF-10. The diary covers the Battle of Okinawa, the sinking of the Japanese super battleship Yamato, the March 18, 1945 kamikaze near miss, and the April 16, 1945 kamikaze attack. Before the diary begins, Beil writes:
"These few comments - notations - // and personal feelings are being // set down as a way of reminiscing // these days in the future. If // things are such that I am not // available to translate these // happenings - I have the promise // of one of my personal friends that // [illegible] will safely carry this to you. // I hope is gives you a better under- // standing of what went on way // out here - so far from peaceful // living and former days - and // will, perhaps, lighten your sorrow."
