DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal image of NASA astronaut Scott Carpenter in a silver spacesuit as he walks across the flight deck of USS Intrepid after being recovered from his space flight as part of Project Mercury. Carpenter is at the center of the image. There are officers surrounding him as he walks towards the island. Video and photographic cameras are capturing the moment. People have formed a semicircle around Carpenter and around the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King helicopter on the left side of the image. The photograph was taken looking down from the island.
