DescriptionSlide, Color; Personal vertical image of a practice space capsule being lifted via a crane and pulley onto USS Intrepid’s starboard aircraft elevator. The capsule was used for practicing the recovery of astronaut Scott Carpenter and his Mercury capsule as part of the Mercury-Atlas 7 NASA mission. The capsule is black with a wide white stripe. Water pours from holes in the capsule’s heat shield. Men in dungarees and dark baseball caps are guiding the capsule onto the deck. Crew members in various uniforms are watching the event from the flight deck and hangar deck railings. Several are taking photographs with cameras. Captioned by photographer/donor, “Practice for Scott Carpenter recovery.”Slide mount has “7”, “Jun 62N”, and “Made in U.S.A.” printed in red on one side. “Kodachrome II // transparency // processed by Kodak” printed in red on the other side.
