DescriptionSlide, Color; Personal vertical image of a practice space capsule being lifted via a pulley off the side of USS Intrepid. The capsule was used for practicing the recovery of astronaut Scott Carpenter and his Mercury capsule in advance of the Mercury-Atlas 7 NASA mission. The capsule is black with a wide white stripe. Water pours from holes toward the bottom of the capsule, near the replica heat shield. Flight deck safety netting is visible in the foreground. The water is calm and the sky is blue with light clouds. Captioned by photographer/donor, “Practice for Scott Carpenter recovery.”Slide mount has “5”, “Jun 62N”, and “Made in U.S.A.” printed in red on one side. “Kodachrome II // transparency // processed by Kodak” printed in red on the other side.
