DescriptionSlide, Color; Personal horizontal image of a USS Intrepid whaleboat or motor boat and a practice space capsule. The capsule was used for practicing the recovery of astronaut Scott Carpenter and his Mercury capsule as part of the Mercury-Atlas 7 NASA mission. The photograph was taken looking down on the whaleboat. Inside the boat are crew members in dungarees and orange life jackets. There is a motor in the bottom of the boat with white tubes. There is a diver (frogman) in the water with the capsule and another standing in the boat. A crew member holds a white pole attached to the top of the capsule. The water around the boat is calm. Captioned by photographer/donor “Practice for Scott Carpenter recovery."Slide mount has “14”, “Jun 62N”, and “Made in U.S.A.” printed in red on one side. “Kodachrome II // transparency // processed by Kodak” printed in red on the other side.
