DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal image of the sail erected in the fo'c'sle of USS Intrepid after the torpedo strike on February 17, 1944. This photograph was taken from the starboard edge of the fo'c'sle looking aft, with the ship's hull at left and a railing at right. Water is visible at the far right. The sail in the center of the image is made of a canvas patchwork with a netting layer behind. An area on the left side of the image appears to have been boarded up with plywood. There is a white border around the image.

The back has "88476 // An outside view of the canvas wrap at the foc'el [fo'c'sle] to cut down on cross wind to help // ship keep a straight course. This photo is of the starboard bow under the flight // deck. Soon after, CV carriers had the foc'el [fo'c'sle] closed in on both sides. (Feb. 1944)" printed in black ink and “Port bow // looking aft” written in black ink on an orange sticker. “This paper // manufactured // by Kodak” is printed repeatedly throughout.
