DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal image of a jury-rig sail covered in netting in the anchor chain room in the fo'c'sle. Crew members stitched together the sail after the ship was damaged by a torpedo in February 1944. The two wildcats that engage the anchor chain are visible, with one in the foreground and another behind it. A group of five light-skinned men are sitting in the background. The sail, made of canvas and netting, is behind them. Anchor chains are visible around the wildcats and at right. There is a white border around the image with “CV11 1954-44” written in black ink in the bottom right corner.

The back has "BS110040" written in black ink. The back has "U.S. Naval Institute // NH 88475 The bow area // is all closed in." written in black ink and "with a jury-rig sail on // the forecastle, after // rudder was severely // damaged by a torpedo hit // at Truk, Feb. 1944. // Decorated by this crazy – // quilt sail, she arrived // in Pearl Harbor, @24 Feb. 1944" and "NH 88475 // released naval history // photograph" printed in black ink.
