BiographyTom Caldwell served on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11) as part of Attack Squadron 76 (VA-76) from 1958 to 1960. His squadron was embarked on board several times during that period, including for the LantFlex cruise in 1958. Caldwell was an aviation structural mechanic second class (AME2). While the AME rating's primary responsibilities involved the upkeep of ejection seats and oxygen systems, most of Caldwell's duties were administrative because he knew how to type. He worked in the air intelligence office, maintenance office and flight deck.
