DescriptionSlide, Color; Personal vertical image of a practice space capsule on the starboard aircraft elevator of USS Intrepid. The capsule was used for practicing the recovery of astronaut Scott Carpenter and his Mercury capsule in advance of the Mercury-Atlas 7 NASA mission. The capsule is black with a wide white stripe and has the number “24” on the side. The capsule is being lifted by a pulley. The replica heat shield is hanging down from the bottom of the capsule. It appears to be attached to the rest of the capsule by heavy gray fabric. Crew members in dungarees and blue baseball caps stand around the capsule. On the right side of the image, sailors are watching the events from a gun tub. The water is calm and the sky is blue. Captioned by photographer/donor, “Practice for Scott Carpenter recovery.”Slide mount has “21”, “May 62N”, and “Made in U.S.A.” printed in blue and red on one side. “Kodak Ektachrome // transparency // processed by Kodak” printed in blue on the other side.
