DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal image of officers and enlisted men around a table in USS Intrepid's library. Enlisted men in dress blue jumpers and officers in dark uniforms are sitting around a table in the ship's library with chess sets. All of the men have light skin. Pierce Yarrell "PY" Matthews Jr is seated at the center of the table with his hand on a chess piece. There is another table in the foreground that also has chess sets on it. There is a white border around the image. The back has “CVA-11 2348L10-61 Date Oct 23 1961 // USS Intrepid (CVA-11) // Subject: Group shot of contestants // in chess tournament between // USS Intrepid & USS Newport News // Official U.S. Navy Photograph // Not for publication // unless officially released” written and stamped in black at the center. Around the edges is “Intrepid team = all sitting // except extreme right + 2 standing // LCDR’s.”, “We did not play with any of // the 3 unusual sets.”, “Some of the snulfs (sp) were // due to unlikely location // of white green on my board.”, and “We won 5-1 – the one loser // was our ship champ (his 6th) // the LCDR above me. CPO on my // left did not play.” written in faded black ink. The photograph is accompanying a letter dated November 22, 1961.
