DescriptionExtent: 2 foldersThe Fred Lugar Papers consist of mostly postcards bought and sent by Frederick Dee Lugar while serving on Intrepid from April 1, 1967 to May 1, 1968. Two letters and five postcards are addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Bud Whittaker, Lugar's aunt and uncle. In them, he discusses topics such as ports of call, items he bought in port, visiting the Great Buddha and the zoo in Japan, strikes against North Vietnam, rank promotion, Intrepid in the Tonkin Gulf, visiting Hong Kong, and other family goings on. Fourteen (14) other postcards are blank, mostly from commercial postcard sets sold in Japan.
Correspondence, July 2 & 29, 1967
- July 2, 1967, to Mr. & Mrs. Bud Whittaker, on Intrepid letter and stamp envelope. The letter is to Lugar's aunt and uncle and discusses ports that Intrepid has recently visited such as the Philippines, gifts that Lugar will try to get them in Japan, strikes Intrepid has participated in against North Vietnam, and other shipboard events.
- July 29, 1967, to Mr. & Mrs. Bud Whittaker, on Intrepid letter and stamp envelope. The letter is to Lugar's aunt and uncle and discusses visiting Japan, Intrepid going back into the Tonkin Gulf and upcoming ports of call.
