BiographyPierce Yarrell "PY" Matthews Jr. served on board the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA/CVS-11) in the early 1960s as a lieutenant commander in the Gunnery Department, also known as the Weapons Department. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. After retiring from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander, he began a second career in teaching and tutoring, including such subjects as math, chess and dance.
