DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white. Official horizontal image of USS Intrepid's bow with the tanker Drafn directly behind the ship. This photo was taken after the two ships nearly collided. "Drafn" is printed on the tanker's stern, and it is traveling away from Intrepid. Catwalks are visible along the side of Intrepid, and aircraft are partially visible on the flight deck. The water around the ship is choppy and the sky is clear.

Back of image has "CVA-11 2364-(L) 10-61 Date Oct 28 1961 // U.S.S. Intrepid (CVA-11) // Subject: // Near collision with Drafn // tanker from Oslo, at // anchorage in Genoa, Italy // 0800 - 10-28-61 // Official U.S. Navy photograph // not for publication // unless officially released" printed in black ink and handwritten in blue ink.

Donor note reads “This is not as close as the Drafn got to Intrepids Bow. The entire crew was evacuated from the front 100 feet of the bow. Only personnel left were myself and BM1 Donald G. Pike. Pike has his head out of the Bow porthole giving orders to me as I operated the anchor windless [windlass] as the last of our starboard chain was [reached or released] the crew on the Drafn woke up and put the oiler under power and moved the ship.”
