DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Horizontal official U.S. Navy photograph of a Grumman SB2C Helldiver airplane that taxied off the edge of the flight deck of USS Intrepid. The image shows the airplane angled nose down over the bow of the ship with the tail and vertical stabilizer in the air. The left wing of the plane is in the folded position, and the cockpit is open. The U.S. national aircraft insignia, or “Stars and Bars,” is visible on the back half of the fuselage and depicts a white star over a blue circular field and white rectangular bars outlined in red on either side. The tail of the aircraft has a white cross or plus sign on the top with a white number “5” below. Flight crew wearing dungarees are gathered on the flight deck near the upturned airplane. Some stand on other aircraft. Two water hoses extend along the flight deck toward the airplane. Four crew members are standing in a 20mm gun tub, observing the plane. In the background two aircraft can be seen flying in the sky on the right of the image. Clouds and ocean are also visible. On the back of the photograph, there is a handwritten inscription that reads "To. 338 // SB2C that taxied into // cat walk" in black ink.On View
