DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Official horizontal image of two officers, a shipyard worker and a sailor in one of the engine rooms of USS Intrepid. All of these individuals have dark hair and light skin. The two officers are wearing U.S. Navy officer khaki work uniforms; they are standing with arms akimbo in the foreground on the left side of the image. The man at left is wearing a U.S. Navy lieutenant’s insignia and his hair is a buzz-cut. The second from left, Commander Michael V. Martini, is wearing an officer’s hat and has the insignia of a commander. The two officers are facing a shipyard worker to their right who is wearing civilian clothing, a safety helmet and glasses. The shipyard worker faces the camera. He is holding a flashlight in his left hand. In the background of the image a sailor is visible. He is wearing a U.S. Navy dungaree working uniform with a white cloth dangling from a pants pocket. Insulated steam pipes are visible above and around the men. One of the pipes has “MAIN STEAM 600 LB.” stenciled on it in black ink. A horizontal strip of paper is taped to the bottom part of the image with the caption “Inspection tour with Shipyard Machinst [sic] ‘Brothers’ and Lt Phillips Main Propulsion Assistant” printed in black ink.
