DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Personal vertical image of a crew member adjusting a valve next to a bilge pump on the lower level of a fire room (boiler room) on USS Intrepid. The sailor has dark hair and light skin, and he is wearing a U.S. Navy dungaree working uniform with the insignia of a first class petty officer. A notebook and pens are protruding from his shirt’s breast pocket, and a flashlight is hanging from the back of his belt. The man has a cigarette in his left hand and a metallic band around his left wrist. His right hand is extended to grasp a valve wheel attached to one of the pipes that are positioned vertically on the bulkhead next to him. Two of the pipes have legible writing on them. The leftmost pipe, partially obscured, reads “977 // 3t // FR 92 // 100” where the writing is legible. Another pipe, just left of the sailor, reads “H.P. Main.” The bilge pump is visible opposite the sailor. The rest of the background is filled with pipes, valve wheels and gauges. There is a white border on the image with “Sep 67” printed in black ink. Back has “14” handwritten in blue ink and a repeating watermark which reads “A Kodak Paper.”
