DescriptionExtent: 3 foldersHarry W. Harrison Jr. was a highly experienced naval aviator during World War II and served in numerous squadrons. In October 1943, he assumed command of VF-6, relieving renowned naval aviator Edward "Butch" O’Hare. The Harry W. Harrison Jr. Papers contain his diary, a letter about the role of commanding officer of VF-6, a speech given by Harrison, and a note to his mother. The diary covers the period from June 1943 through March 1944 and encompasses his service on the aircraft carriers USS Yorktown (CV-10) and USS Intrepid (CV-11).
Diary (and typewritten use copy of diary), June 1943–March 1944
- The diary documents his service in Fighting Squadron 5 (VF-5) and command of Fighting Squadron 6 (VF-6), covering air combat in the first campaigns of the Central Pacific offensive as well as the experience of enduring enemy air attacks at sea. It documents Harrison’s time on board the Yorktown and Intrepid. He writes about the torpedo attack against Intrepid in February 1944. The diary also includes numerous documents that have been taped to the pages, including two naval dispatches.
