DescriptionPhotograph, Black and white; Square, official, aerial image of military facilities on Truk Atoll (now Chuuk Lagoon) after being bombed. The shoreline is running vertically down the center of the image. The right side of the image shows a landscape with buildings, roadways and trees. The left side of the image has water and two docks. Down the center of the image, thick plumes of smoke rise up from the shore. There is a north directional arrow in the lower left corner. Handwritten and typed at the bottom of the image is, “E17 RI INT20 8 ¼” 3000’ 2045 GCT 2-16-44 Truk conf”. A clock face is in the lower right corner. Tabs are visible in the center of each edge. The edges of other photographs are visible above and below the border. The back has "Official photograph // not to be used for publication // by order of // the Chief of the Bureau // of Aeronautics // U.S.S. Intrepid // Secret" in black ink.On View
